Ok. So, we have this really old vac that you have to go over and over the same place again & weighs about 50 pounds. Please tell us the best vac for 100-200 dollars!

I bought a Bissell clearview 11 over a year ago and it does as good a job as my daughter”s Dyson. Bissell cost me 89.00 on sale. It does not take vacuum bags. So far, so good

Carol asks…

What is the best vacuum cleaner you can recommend???

I know dyson, bissel, dirt devil, eureka, and others are good but i want to know an exact model that works great and costs between 100-200 dollars

Lihi answers:

Do yourself a favor, you can buy a vacuum for $100 to $200 or even less, but if you want something to will last, you’re going to have to invest some more money. All vacuums today work well – you could argue about bag versus bag-less models, but that really comes down to personal preference; the only major difference between one vacuum and the next is build quality. Hard to believe but about 90% of all vacuums come from the same couple of factories in Asia just built to different specifications and designs that are determined by the home-office companies (Eureka, Dirt Devil, etc…) When you buy one of these types of vacuums, you are buying something that will do the job but the materials and manufacturing quality is seriously lacking and will therefore, not last very long; about 2 to 5 years depending on use. The few higher-end (above your $200 limit) that are still made in countries like the US, Italy and Germany really won’t preform amazingly better but they are made of better materials and will last longer, possibly well over 10 years. It always comes down to “pay now” or “pay later”. You can buy a Miele (my personal favorite) or an Oreck now for $500.00+ and have it for the next 12 to 15 years, or you can buy a Dirt Devil for about $170.00 only to have to buy a new one in 3 to 4 years, or maybe even sooner.

Sandy asks…

Which is the best brand of vacuum cleaners? Eureka? Bissell? Hoover?

I need to buy a new vacuum because the dirt devil I have doesnt work. I would like some feedback before I buy a new one. I’m looking to spend around $100 dollars. Any preferred models or brands?

Lihi answers:

I bought a Eureka last winter because it was the one recommended by Consumer Reports. I use it daily and have been very happy. It was $140. Your best bet is to go to the library, go to the reference desk and ask the lady for the consumer reports on vacuums and she will very nicely look it up for you. Or you can subscribe to their website for $5 for a month and research it yourself. It will also depend on whether you mostly vacuum hard floor (vinyl, hardwood) or soft (carpets). You won’t be sorry if you do a little checking around first. The super expensive Orecks and Kirbys are nice, but I don’t think they’re 5-6 times better, which is how much more you’ll pay.

Sharon asks…

In your opinion, what is the best working/sucking brand/model for under $100?

I have to replace my vacuum. I buy one every year. I usually spend $65 (always under $100) or so. I realize that’s not very costly, but I can’t see paying hundreds of dollars for a machine that may also break down quickly.

What has been your best vacuum?
Thank you.

Lihi answers:

Spend a little more and you might be surprised. I paid about $250 for an upper-middle line Kenmore and it lasted about 12 years and worked great. It might have lasted longer had I not dropped it down the stairs and cracked the body. I still duct taped it up and I use it in my basement to this day.

I bought another similar Kenmore and it is about 5-6 years old. It works like the day I brought it home.

So I think you might get more value over the long run (and better performance) by being a higher quality vacuum.

My mother has had the same Electrolux for like 40 years and it still sucks better than most women I have had. My mom also has a Hoover upright to use on her carpets. She has me change the belt at least twice a year because they are always breaking. Actually, she has two Hoovers – so she can still use one while the other one is broken.
